Practical information for your trip to Bușteni

Everything foreign visitors usually ask us about: getting here from the airport, trains, local transport, emergency numbers, plugs, and money. If something below is out of date, please tell reception and we will fix it.

Getting here

From Bucharest to Bușteni

By car or taxi

From Henri Coandă Airport (OTP)

About 118 km, roughly 1h45 to 2h by road depending on traffic. A private transfer or airport taxi is the simplest option straight to the hotel door. Ride-hailing apps (Bolt, Uber) also serve the airport.

By train

From Bucharest Gara de Nord

Direct trains run from Bucharest's main station to Bușteni, journey time around 2 hours. From the airport, take a taxi or the airport train/bus into Bucharest first, then a train from Gara de Nord. Bușteni station is 2 minutes' walk from the hotel.

By car, self-drive

Via the DN1 / A3

The main road north from Bucharest through Ploiești and the Prahova Valley. Expect slower traffic on weekends and holidays, when the valley is busy with day-trippers. Complex Caraiman has its own parking.

Getting around

Once you are in the Prahova Valley

Taxis

Local taxis & ride-hailing

Metered local taxis wait near the train station and can be called by phone. Bolt is the most reliable ride-hailing app in this area; Uber coverage is patchier outside Bucharest and Brașov.

Trains

Between resort towns

Local trains connect Bușteni with Sinaia, Predeal and Brașov several times a day, an easy way to day-trip without a car.

On foot

Bușteni itself

The town center, train station, cable car and the trailhead for Urlătoarea Waterfall are all within a 10 to 15 minute walk of the hotel, so a car is not required once you arrive.

Local food

What to expect

Romanian mountain cooking leans on soups (ciorbă), grilled meat, stews, and trout from local rivers. Portions are generous and restaurants outside the main strip are usually cheaper than they look.

Practical details

Plugs, money, language and more

Electricity

230V, type C / F sockets

Standard European two-pin round plugs (type C, sometimes called Europlug, or type F with grounding pins). Visitors from the UK, US, Ireland or elsewhere with different plug shapes need an adapter; the voltage itself is unsuitable for US 120V devices without a converter.

Money

Romanian leu (RON)

Cards are widely accepted in hotels, restaurants and shops. Keep some cash for small guesthouses, mountain cabins, market stalls and local taxis, which are often cash-only.

Tipping

Not obligatory

Around 10% in restaurants is common if you were happy with the service, but it is not expected the way it is in the US. Rounding up is fine for taxis and casual service.

Language

Romanian, with English widely understood

Our reception speaks English. Younger staff and people in tourist areas generally speak some English too; a few Romanian words are appreciated but not required.

Time zone

Eastern European Time (EET)

UTC+2 in winter, UTC+3 during daylight saving time from late March to late October, the same as Finland, Greece and Bulgaria.

Mobile & internet

EU roaming, or a local SIM

Visitors from the EU/EEA use their home data plan under roam-like-at-home rules. Others can buy a prepaid SIM (Vodafone, Orange, Telekom, Digi) cheaply in Bucharest or Bușteni. Wi-Fi is available at the hotel.

Weather

Changes quickly at altitude

Mountain weather can shift fast even in summer. Bring layers and a waterproof jacket for any hike above the tree line, and check conditions with reception before heading up.
